The Beneath Director Spotlight: Lisette Vlassak
After graduating from the Netherlands Film Academy with her short film Cocon, a project that went on to win awards at both national and international festivals, Lisette Vlassak has built a versatile career in youth drama, short fiction, and web series. Central to her work are themes of self-acceptance and identity.
“Filmmaking has helped me rediscover my own voice,” she says. “By telling my stories, I understand myself better and have learned to trust my intuition.”
The journey to that realization took courage. “There was a time when fear paralyzed me, but I decided to push my boundaries again and again, no matter how frightening it felt.” That mindset shaped her into a filmmaker who values curiosity over certainty—a philosophy she carries into every project. “Keep learning and stay hungry,” is her personal mantra, both on and off set.
With her debut in the horror and psychological thriller genres, Lisette explores the fears and vulnerabilities that accompany mental fragility, using these genres as powerful metaphors for the inner human experience. Through this approach, she aims to further develop her distinct voice and storytelling style in the years to come.
